You are not alone
I recently read an article regarding the statistics of those who find themselves alone at the end of life. While there are a variety of reasons people are alone, the number of people who are widowed, divorced, or never married has increased over the years. The fact is that there are those who face illness later in life and sometimes find they don’t have the support they need.
Hospice of Wichita Falls has witnessed these sad statistics first hand. Whether homeless or alone, our goal is that a patient in our care will never die alone. A couple of specific cases immediately come to my mind and I would like to share those with you today.
Approximately two years ago, Hospice of Wichita Falls cared for a patient that came to us through Faith Mission. He had no family, other than his friends from the Mission, to help support him through this difficult time. Whatever happened in his life that left him homeless no longer mattered; what did matter was that he went from homeless to hospice which meant he would receive the support and care he needed when it mattered the most. While on the services of Hospice of Wichita Falls, this patient received the individualized care of a team of professionals who were able to insure that all his needs were met.
Our goal at Hospice of Wichita Falls, is for no one to go through the last stage of their life alone. No matter how rich or poor, young or old, no one should have to come to the end of their life without support. With the growing rate of single households on the rise, this is an issue that we manage often. Hospice of Wichita Falls, along with other health care organizations in our community, is here to make sure no one is left alone.
I am very proud to be part of a community and organization where the people matter most. If you know of someone who is alone and suffering from a life-limiting illness and could benefit from having a professional resource to help, please call Hospice of Wichita Falls at (940) 691-0982 or visit www.hospiceofwf.org
